The Ottawa 5O5 fleet hosted and Espoir Camp July 29th-30th to allow local under 25 sailors to learn more about the 5O5 and gain experience sailing the boat. We had 6 teams participate, 4 using boats loaned to them by Fleet 4 members and 2 using their own.
Over the course of the weekend, the young sailors were coached by experienced 5O5 sailors Marie Gendron and Shona Moss. On the Saturday of the camp, conditions were perfect for gaining experience in the 5O5 with wind ranging from 5-12 knots, great for drills and practice racing. Sunday was a regatta day and we the wind was much lighter. 3 short 1 lap races were sailed.
The 505 Espoir Camp model is used by the French 505 Class to introduce youth to the boat. The 2017 Espoir camp in Ottawa was a success and we hope to host one again next year. A huge thank you to the 5O5 owners who lent their boats out for the weekend and to Marie and Shona for organizing and coaching. These initiatives are important in order to attract new young sailors to the class.
